Social Studies and Science
Science in kindergarten involves using observation and hands-on experiences to learn reasons for change through units on plant and animal needs and life cycles, force and motion, and the sun’s energy. We partner with the Hitchcock Center for nature education lessons and participate in the district’s Farm-to-School program.
Social studies units focus on identity, culture and tradition, classroom citizenship/community, and connecting our place in the world from local to global.

Meet Ms. Amy
Though I came to it later in my teaching career, kindergarten is where my heart is! Kindergarten is where I feel most effective, confident, skilled, energized, and happy! This is my 8th year in kindergarten at Crocker Farm after several years in the district’s Early Childhood Special Education program. My extensive background in early childhood special education is beneficial for meeting the diverse needs of young learners and working with specialists in a team-based approach in the kindergarten classroom. My colleagues and I collaborate extremely well and have put together engaging, developmentally-appropriate, integrated curriculum activities and lesson plans around social justice, nature explorations, and identity as well as thematic units that vary based on the current class’s interests that I look forward to teaching every year. I am most excited about project-based, integrated curriculum learning opportunities for children. We will be sure to experience all that kindergarten has to offer through hands-on activities, child-guided/interest-based creative curricula, literacy, science, math, art, music, and multi-sensory activities. I believe that children learn best through active engagement and multiple opportunities to learn concepts and practice skills in a variety of ways. Additionally, I have experience in nature education for young learners and value the outdoors as a great learning tool. I’m excited to connect our learning to the school gardens and the surrounding fields and woods. Kindergarten is a fun year of exploring, discovering, learning, and playing, and I am thrilled to be a part of it!
